Tyler Posey’s Music
The Tea:
Many people probably know the name Tyler Posey from MTV’s hit Teen Wolf as the lead character Scott McCall. But he does more than acting, he makes music. Maybe like me and you’re new to Teen Wolf or just don’t follow actor’s too closely, so maybe this is news to you too. I was shocked. Not because he could sing or write music but because of the kind of music he makes. Shocked in a very good and pleasant way because it’s probably my favorite genre.
Tyler Posey’s new album, Drugs, has that pop-punk/punk band sound that takes me back to the music I loved in my teens. The same energy, the same vibe. Even his music videos have that same energy and I didn’t know how much I missed it. The songs have heavy themes but the few videos he has out is a level of ridiculous awesome that isn’t taking itself seriously. Which was what a lot of punk music videos did back in the day.
I don’t often get into music. I love music but I don’t get very invested into bands like I do say a book series or tv show. I don’t follow the singers and their careers, I’m not part of a fan base, stuff like that. TV, film, and books are my typical escapist entertainment choices. I just don’t get that same joy or attachment with music. I love to listen to music while I exercise or do various tasks but it’s more for the upbeat background noise. Even in my teens I didn’t get all that invested in bands and music. I’ve never been to a concert that wasn’t at an event I was already attending, the concert just a fun side by product not the main event.
Overall, I love some bands but mostly I just love songs. Sometimes I don’t even know the band. It took me until now, being almost 30, to realize I did sort of have a preference of genre though. I didn’t know it at the time or didn’t realize what it was called but it was pop-punk or punk. A lot of my favorite songs all came from a few bands. Green Day, Linkin Park, and Simple Plan being some of the biggest. I had CD’s and an iPod with many of their albums. But aside from those three, I also loved songs from bands like Blink 182, Sum 41, Yellowcard, My Chemical Romance, Limp Bizkit, Panic at the Disco, All American Rejects, Jimmy Eat World etc. Tyler Posey made me think of just about all those bands. He is like the old school punk/pop-punk. While it’s been making a resurgence lately it’s not quite the same as the og pop-punk. But Tyler, to me, embodies all that old school vibe.
Tyler also sounds genuine in his music. It’s real and when you watch the music videos it’s fun. It’s emotional in the lyrics but he’s not afraid to have some ridiculousness in the video and that’s wonderful. From what I understand he writes his songs based on what he knows or has experienced which is fairly typical but that doesn’t always feel genuine. Or I’m just a hard music person to please. Could be both. But you can tell he loves what he’s doing in his music and his music videos. And if you happen to listen to him talk in an interview his passion and love for what he is creating is more than apparent.
Listening to Tyler Posey’s new album brought me actual joy. I just about cried. I don’t know if it was partly the nostalgia, lack of quality entertainment, or what but that is exceptionally rare occurrence for music to illicit that response from me. It’s uncommon in books and tv but downright rare in music. And I couldn’t be happier about this discovery.
I can’t wait to see what else Tyler brings us in the future. His music is absolutely legend. If you haven’t checked it out I HIGHLY recommend you do.
