9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 3 - The Devil You Know
Hey Angels and Biscuits! Today’s Tea?
9-1-1 Season 6 Episode Three! – Review
The Devil You Know is solely focused on Athena and Bobby in Florida investigating Tanya’s murder but it is by no means a subpar episode. Despite the lack of our other 9-1-1 characters this is a really strong episode. We have drama, suspense, and a debate on who-dun-it. Not to mention great acting all around.
This is an episode I really don't have any complaints about, it’s really overall just good. So, we will just get right into talking about it.
We start off with a flashback into Athena’s childhood. She had that trademark Athena sass even as a child. Drying the cast iron right away is important but not wanting to is quite mood and I could relate to young Athena. While cast iron is superior it does take some maintenance. We see that Beatrice was always bad cop and Samuel was good cop. Athena always had a rougher relationship with her mom and an easier one with her dad. But she had loving parents all the same. I do still wonder if her dad really did have flat tire or if it was something else. Not killing Tanya as I don't think 9-1-1 would go that dark, though I’d be on board if they wanted to. Her dad had great taste in clothes though. That shirt looked so fancy, shame it got dirty.
Early on it seems clear one of the contractors killed Tanya but I was torn if it was Jr. or Sr. Senior had more knowledge of hiding a body with the tools available to a contractor but the son had more suspicious behavior. After the father made it seem like Samuel was guilty I thought he at least had to be in on it. If he wasn't the killer he protected his son. I was hoping Samuel did because I watch so many crime dramas that it would have been a great story but I had settled on it was Jr. Sr. or both.
Bobby and Athena had a moment I really liked in Samuel’s office. Athena was afraid to really dig into her father’s past, afraid what she might find. Bobby knew this and was basically snooping in Samuel’s office for her. Athena was unhappy at first but became more on board after he asked her what was she so afraid of. She had doubts and other pesky thoughts she needed to overcome but Bobby was always there being what Athena needed. I love how this show dives into Athena and Bobby taking turns at being the strong one and the vulnerable one. They really are one of my favorite tv couples.
After Bobby and Athena’s sweet moment Athena decides to investigate. They go to Tanya’s old house where Athena is reacquainted with Tanya’s older sister at gunpoint. She blamed Athena and her father but it felt like projecting blame. Bobby has a great chivalrous moment and disarms her and that leads to some truths being unveiled. Tanya was never taken from her room but snuck out to follow her sister to a party. She never told the police and like I thought was projecting blame. At that party was none other than Jr. in the flashbacks its revealed to us that it was Jr. He was an utterly horrible person and was going to do horrific things to Tanya and killed her when she ran away from him. Senior did turn out to be protecting Jr, his only son. So that theory was correct. I really liked all the actors in the flashbacks, they did amazing. I'm not always impressed with guest stars but this episode did great.
Now maybe my favorite moment of the episode, Bobby and Athena finding Jr. Jr went to tie up loose ends with Tanya’s sister but Bobby and Athena had figured out who really did from various clues. Bobby through the unique noise Senior’s truck made and Athena through how the body of Tanya was hidden. Only someone with decent contractor’s knowledge would have been able to hide her body the way it was done. They get to Tanya’s sister before Jr. can shoot her, Bobby gets into a fight with him and I honestly love when bobby gets to have those physical scenes. He’s not the Buck or Eddie but seeing him defend his family is satisfying. When Athena showed up I thought perhaps Jr. was going to get shot but if he’s dead that’s almost the easy way out, so when Athena clocked him with the shovel I was very happy with that choice.
Athena and Tanya’s sister had a heartwarming talk and in the end Athena finally solved her white whale and Tanya and her family can finally have closure, even though the truth was painful. We end on a high note though, with Athena’s father finally waking up. We get a sweet family reunion with Athena, Beatrice, Bobby, and Samuel. The episode gave us a lot of darkness but ended with something heartwarming.
Overall, I really loved this episode. Great acting, great story, great drama. It was almost like a lighter episode of criminal minds. I had no real complaints and was invested the whole time.
