9-1-1 Season Five Episode 16: May Day - Review

This episode had some really great moments and some really odd moments. I love more screen time with May because she’s really developed into such a great character but there’s some Taylor and and Lucy moments that were just not great.

Lucy felt a bit forced in this episode. She’s still temporary and Ravi who is now officially part of the team was given no screen time? It’s like she was only there to set up the conversation with Taylor at the end. Which, if it’s setting up for Buck and Taylor’s breakup, ok. But the writing for Lucy just never holds up and hasn’t been impressive.

And Taylor’s scene was…odd. She hasn’t shown any inclination that she was onto who Buck kissed. But in this episode it seemed that she was in on the secret now. She confronts Lucy, almost seems to threaten Lucy to not screw up the 118. Though Taylor is not much better in that respect. She has wanted to throw the 118 under the bus in the past, and may still throw them under the bus for another big hit story. I’ve been of the opinion that Buck and Taylor will breakup in large part due to Taylor loving her work too much. Choosing work over Buck, not wanting the same things in life as Buck because her job will always come first.

Onto better scenes. May. May was amazing in this episode. I loved all her scenes. She’s grown so much as a character and it’s been great development. I do wonder what choice May will be making in the season finale. I was leaning on May choosing college but after  seeing Claudette die I’m not as sure anymore. She and Claudette finally broke some ground this episode, really seemed to get past a lot of those hiccups they’ve been having. And we got some backstory for Claudette’s character. Claudette was getting a redemption arc too and then that went out the window. But now I’m unsure if May will choose college to follow Claudette’s advice or stay at dispatch because that’s where she feels she needs to be because of Claudette.

We also got to see Bobby being the amazing father that he is. May being trapped inside meant he was going in to save his daughter. And at the end we see May calling Bobby her dad and it was so sweet and it was obvious how much those words meant to Bobby. I also did love how Buck and Eddie share a look while Lucy looked confused as to why May still being inside is such a big deal. If you’ve read past episode reviews you are aware I’m not Lucy’s biggest fan and that I find the writers are doing the actress a huge injustice with this character. She has no chemistry of any kind with anyone in the 118. They even keep her on the outside waiting for news about Bobby. She doesn’t fit.

Then we have Eddie moments that brightened my day. He is by far my favorite character on the show. I loved how he and Linda just stood with coffee and watched as May and Claudette fought, like it was one of Eddie’s Telenovelas. We also had one of my favorite lines from Eddie this season. I was incredibly upset with Josh for his harsh treatment of Eddie when he assisted on a dispatch call, saying Eddie was a guest in this house. Today the turns have tabled and Eddie got to tell Josh he was the guest in the house. Josh was all of us when he said he’d been waiting months to say that. Side note, maybe Josh will finally get a nice man which I’ve been hoping for for seasons now. He did seem to have a connection with the maintenance guy.

Back to Eddie. This I think is the episode we get confirmation Eddie will be coming back to the 118 soon. Say the season five finale soon. He has a conversation with Linda about where he wants to be job wise and when she sees him later in his turnout gear she says looks like god gave you a sign and Eddie has a very happy smile. That right there said Eddie had made up his mind, that this was where he was meant to be. Side by side with Buck, doing a job that brings him both purpose and joy. Eddie, like May, will have a choice to make in the finale and I’m really now wondering what that will be for him. This episode all but confirms he’s made the choice to come back to the 118 so if that’s his choice it will feel a bit lazy in regards to plot and writing. I’d be ok with it because that’s a choice I want for Eddie and it’s not anything out of character or out of the blue but it would be lazy in my opinion. But I’m not sure what other choice they could give Eddie that would make sense. I have one opinion but I highly doubt the writers and show runners would share it at the moment. So that leads me back to Eddie confirming with everyone else that he’s ready to come back.

This episode also has such a good ending. We see Hen connecting some suspicious dots with Jonah after Claudette died after all seemed fine. They set up Jonah’s hero complex pretty well in my opinion and I love it’s Hen who connects the dots. The continuation of that is going to be good.

Overall a pretty decent episode

7/10 Biscuits
